My Absolute Favorite Best Closing Lines/Passage in Books

Hi everyone! Last week I wrote a post of my favorite best opening lines in books which you can read here.  This time I’m going to post my favorite closing lines in books. I believe that a closing line in a book is as important as the first.  For me, great closing lines are the ones that remains forever embedded in your mind and leaves you a good lasting impression of the book overall, gives you the best closure that any reader deserves, and of course makes you excited or eager to read future installments (if the books are going to be a series). So without further ado, here are some of my favorite closing lines from books.

“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”

George Orwell, Animal Farm

“The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well.”

-J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

“I am thinking of aurochs and angels, the secret of durable pigments, prophetic
sonnets, the refuge of art. And this is the only immortality you and I may share, my Lolita.”

-Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita

I’ll tell them how I survive it. I’ll tell them that on bad mornings, it feels impossible to take pleasure in anything because I’m afraid it could be taken away. That’s when I make a list in my head of every act of goodness I’ve seen someone do. It’s like a game. Repetitive. Even a little tedious after more than twenty years. But there are much worse games to play.

-Suzanne Collins,Mockingjay

“But that is the beginning of a new story—the story of the gradual renewal of
a man, the story of his gradual regeneration, of his passing from one world into
another, of his initiation into a new unknown life. That might be the subject of a new
story, but our present story is ended.”

Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment

“He loved Big Brother.”

– George Orwell, 1984

“So, if this does end up being my last letter, please believe that things are good with me, and even when they’re not, they will be soon enough. And I believe the same about you.”

-Stephen Chbosky,The Perks of Being A Wallflower

“I believed my life would never have been a struggle if Mr. Tanaka hadn’t torn me away from my tipsy house. But now I know that our world is no more permanent than a wave rising on the ocean. Whatever our struggles and triumphs, however we may suffer them, all too soon they bleed into a wash, just like watery ink on paper.”

Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha

“When they entered, they found hanging upon the wall a splendid portrait of their master as they had last seen him, in all the wonder of his exquisite youth and beauty. Lying on the floor was a dead man, in evening dress, with a knife in his heart. He was withered, wrinkled, and loathsome of visage. It was not till they had examined the rings that they recognized who it was.”

-Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

“I am no longer Tris, the selfless, or Tris, the brave. I suppose that now, I must become more than either.”

-Veronica Roth, Divergent

“This isn’t happily ever after. It’s so much more than that.”

-Kiera Cass, The One

“And so I step up, into the darkness within, or else the light.”

-Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale

“He was soon borne away by the waves and lost in darkness and distance.”

Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

“He is the beauty, inside and out. He is the silver lining in a world of darkness.  He is my light.”

-Marie Lu, Prodigy

So what are your favorite closing lines? Feel free to share and comment below. Hope you all have a wonderful day! 🙂 ❤

  1. My fave was definitely Mockingjay. there are a lot of books here that I have not read, but I think that most of these last lines were very intriguing.

  2. You’ve got some great ones here. How about Great Gatsby? “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” Or Sun Also Rises. “Yes,” I said. “Isn’t it pretty to think so?”

        1. I actually don’t know! haha It just doesn’t interest me as much as the other books. It’s on my TBR list but it’s just not on my top priority. Someday I will probably read it! 🙂

        2. Seconding this! The Book Thief is superb – not a premise that would usually capture my attention either but gave it a go on the recommendation of a friend and so glad I did! Its genre is almost irrelevant, it’s that good.

            1. AHAHA okay, okay I will definitely read it. Maybe not now seeing there’s other books that I am far more excited to read, but I will! 😉
